Tourist Information
Bournemouth University is surrounded by the natural beauty of Britain's
south coast.
As one of the UK's premier sunshine resorts, Bournemouth offers
the attractions of a large city but with the charm of a small town.
Based on the sheltered coast of England, Bournemouth is surrounded
by sea, sand and its fair share of sun. Seven miles of golden beach
stretch along the front with a variety of watersports.
Bournemouth is probably best known today for its centre - a busy
cosmopolitan place, big on entertainment, mainstream shopping, award-winning
gardens and a bustling nightlife.
Nostalgic touches, including the famous pier, intertwine with modern
facilities like the Bournemouth International Centre - just one
of the reasons the town is renowned as a thriving conference and
entertainment area.
Nearby, Poole is a haven for watersports. The town quay faces Poole
Harbour - Europe's largest natural harbour - with a host of waterfront
pubs and restaurants rich in atmosphere.
A short distance away, the landscape changes dramatically - from
the rolling hills of the Purbecks to the wide expanses of the New
Forest - offering something of interest for everyone who visits
the area.
Dorset is one of England's smallest counties, yet it is also one
of its richest, both for its scenic beauty and its historical interest.
Within its boundaries it crams 'old fashioned' seaside resorts such
as Weymouth and Swanage, in addition to Bournemouth, alongside the
dramatic cliff scenery, beautiful coves and bays of beauty spots
such as Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and Kimmeridge Bay. The old ports
of Lyme Regis and Poole have been host to generations of boat owners.
Inland, Dorset is rich in its historic old towns. Dorchester, The
County Town, is in the heart of Thomas Hardy Country and Sherborne
further to the North is home to one of England's finest abbeys.
The County is home to many fine country houses, old castles and
formal gardens. Its coastal paths are a walkers delight and almost
every Dorset village offers a fine Inn and tearooms.
